Doris C. Hamburg, 96, of Elmwood, died at 6:35 p.m., on Friday, November 12, 2021, at Country Comfort in Elmwood.
She was born on August 1, 1925, on a farm in Sandstone, MN, to Albert and Ragnhild (Johnson) Sahlen. Doris married Paul H. Hamburg on March 5, 1946, in St. Paul, MN. Doris took care of Paul at the end of his life until the day he died on May 7, 2007.
She is survived by two children, Alan Hamburg of Cherry Valley, IL, and Darla (Michael) Kovanda of Yates City; and two grandchildren.
She is also preceded in death by her parents; one daughter, Debra Hamburg; five siblings, Corrine Erickson, Ruth Zebrasky, Margo Glienke, Violet Landowski, and Robert Sahlen.
Doris graduated from Sandstone High School in 1943. She went to work for Northwest Airlines in Minneapolis when she turned 18. She helped convert B-24 Bombers into fuel tankers for the war effort. After the war was over, she worked for a Furrier in St. Paul and went to dress making school at night. She then married Paul and moved to northern Idaho and helped start a sawmill. Thereafter, she moved around the country helping Paul with his career. Doris raised three kids that graduated from Bradley University. After Paul retired, they moved to Roscommon, MI. Doris also helped Debra with her medical office in Roscommon. Doris loved Appaloosa horses and raised them for 45 plus years, along with cats and German Shepherd dogs. She also enjoyed gardening and sewing. In 2017, Doris had to move to Illinois, when she was too old to take care of her horse farm. She was the best mother that anyone could hope to have, and she will be sincerely missed.
Cremation rites have been accorded. A private burial of ashes will be held at Spring Park Cemetery in Sandstone, MN, at a later date.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Donor's choice.

You have my condolences! I had only met your family, at a young age. According to my mother Frances (Hamburg) Leake, your family were distant relatives, of hers. Doris apparently lived a full, and rich fulfilling life.
So sorry for your loss.
Sincerely Brian Leake
